Roman L. & Victoria E. Hruska
Saying that he wanted to honor his late wife, Victoria, and his parents Joseph C. and Caroline Hruska, U.S. Senator (Retired) Roman L. Hruksa of Omaha, in December of 1994, pledged a founder contribution of $150,000 to the building fund for the new library.
In recognition of his pledge, the Capital Campaign Committee for the builidng fund drive announced that the building would be designated as the Roman L. and Victoria E. Hruska Memorial Public Library.
Senator Hruska was born in David City while his father was County Superintendent of Schools. Joseph C. Hruska also taught in the Abie, Bruno and Linwood communities during his career. Later he moved his family to Omaha where Roman Hruska grew to manhood and began his career as an attorney and Nebraska political figure.
He served as a member of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners before becoming a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. From there he moved on to the U.S. Senate where he served until 1977. His career in the two Houses of Congress encompassed 24 years.
His wife, Victoria, whom he married in 1930, was his close companion until her death on August 1, 1994.
The Hruska family includes three children, Jana Flagan, Roman Jr., and Quentin, and five grandchildren.
Senator Hruska noted that he and Victoria have been proud of their Czech heritage and the family's connection to Butler County. He added that he was gratified that he was able to help the people of Butler County have a new public library facility.
Senator Hruska passed away on April 25, 1999 at the age of 95.
